Join Kevin McNeal and Adrian Klein for an exciting journey to see the Best of the Palouse. There is no better place to visit in spring then in the Palouse. The Palouse region can be found in southeastern Washington and also parts of North Central Idaho. It is the richest wheat growing area in the United States for many reasons. It grows peas, barley, wheat, hay, lentils, and canola. But perhaps the Palouse is better known for its endless rolling hills of vivid green, rustic rural barns, spring wildflowers, and pastoral vistas that visually amaze the senses. To a photographer this is a dream of sensual landscapes and visual designs where the opportunities to shoot are everywhere. The pastorals are unique to the eye in color, pattern, and designs. And every photographer sees different designs and concepts. Spring is a time to witness lush vivid greens; this is just after the seeds have been planted but before the harvest season. We will be visiting iconic places such as Steptoe Butte and we will also show you some of the lesser-known places except to the locals. We will be providing opportunities to photograph rural barns, rolling hills, historic churches, and wildflowers. Come join us as we visit one of the most beautiful areas in the world in spring.
Special Note:
As of 9/10/11 we have been told that there is a possibility
that Step Toe Butte will be closed starting Spring 2012 for up to 7 months for
radio tower maintenance. Nothing is confirmed yet we believe in providing our
clients as much information as we can to help them make an informed decision.
Obviously this will impact our workshop as Step Toe Butte is one of the only
locations to get up high and view the rolling hills from above. That said regardless
we will hold the workshop in 2012. The Palouse offers may other photographic opportunities
on the backroads. This section will be updated as more information becomes
available.
Itinerary:
Friday to Sunday we
will be staying in the majestic rolling hills photographing from sunrise to
sunset with a midday break on Saturday. Weekend workshops start in the
afternoon on Friday and conclude after check out time on Sunday. We will
spend a majority of the time in the field yet we will have some time
set aside for covering processing, workflow and other photography
essentials. Please bring images from your current portfolio of work. If we have time we try to do either individual or group critiques.
Lodging:
You are welcome to stay where ever you like yet we strongly encourage you lodge where and conduct our presentation. We will be staying at the Best Western in Colfax. This is also where we will be doing our presentation portion of the workshop. Here is the link if you would like to lodge here:
Lodging is not covered with the workshop cost. Mention NW Photo Tours when booking your lodging here and you will receive a discounted rate.
Meals:
We will eat most if not all meals together as this time is an important part of each workshop, this will range in price from Subway to a local brew pub. The meals are not included with the workshop cost. Please bring snacks and fluids with you in case you need a recharge in the field between meals. We will eat breakfast at the at Best Western since it's included with the lodging.
Transportation:
For transportation it will be up to each participant to make their way to the workshop. We however encourage carpooling to make parking and traveling easier during the workshop, plus making new friends, along with this being friendlier on our environment.
Physical Activity Level:
This workshop will require very little hiking. One spot we visit may be about 200 feet of moderate elevation gain covering a few hundred yards. All other areas will be flat walking near where we park.
What To Bring:
In regards to camera gear you will want at minimum a SLR Camera (digital or film), tripod, remote trigger release, polarizer filter, cloth to wipe lens, headlamp, wide angle lens and a zoom lens. I discuss this topic more on the FAQ page. As for clothing you will want good hiking shoes/boots. Avoid cotton like blue jeans. Bring rain jacket/pants if you can. Weather in the Palouse in Spring can change rapidly from sunshine to pouring rain, and can vary from warm to very chilly in the mornings. If you get cold easily, hat and gloves will be a must as well.
And don't forget to bring your enthusiasm and excitement to learn more, see new places and meet like minded people!
Discounts:
We work with a handful of companies to offer our clients discounts on products. See our discounts page for more info.
Additional Information:

We will also send a reminder about the workshop with some additional
information about two weeks prior.
We look forward to photographing with you in the lush rolling hills of the Palouse in 2012. If you are not sure what you are missing just see some of our testimonials.
